FAQ
1. What are the average age and the principal nationalities of your students? How many students do you have?
The age range of our students is 18-75 and the average age is around 30-35. We have many mature students (40s & 50s) as well as young students, which makes the average age relatively high. Among our students coming from more than 50 different countries, major nationalities are American, Japanese, British and German. We are convinced the diversity in age and culture of our students brings dynamism to our classes. We have about 50-60 students on average, and 60-70 students during the summer.
2. How many class levels do you have?
We have 4-6 class levels throughout year in our 5 class rooms:
Absolute beginner, or beginner with very limited knowledge of French (about 50 hours of study)
At the end of the level, student should be able to use French to:
- use basic structures to talk about oneself,
- make contact with others,
- obtain information,
- fill in a form,
- make purchases,
- order in a restaurant…
A1: False beginner/Elementary level (about 100 hours of study)
At the end of the level, student should be able to use French to:
- comprehend very simple situations in everyday life,
- deal with administrative matters,
- start a conversation and participate in it…
A2: Elementary/Intermediate 1 level (about 200 h of study)
At the end of the level, student should be able to use French to:
- comprehend simple subjects about everyday life,
- communicate during a trip,
- talk about a project, an idea, ones job, pastimes, studies, etc using several tenses…
B1: Intermediate 1 level (about 300-400 h of study)
At the end of the level, student should be able to use French to:
- comprehend complex texts,
- talk about a variety of subjects,
- give opinions and debate,
- express oneself in a spontaneous way
B2: Intermediate 2 /Advanced level (about 500-600 h of study)
At the end of the level, student should be able to use French to:
- communicate in a spontaneous way in social and professional contexts,
- be comfortable using all tenses…
C1/C2: Advanced / Proficiency level (700-1000 h of study)
At the end of the level, student should be able to use French to:
- easily comprehend any type of document,
- speak fluently,
- handle the subtleties of the language
3. When can I start the class? What are the starting dates?. When is the school closed?
You can start the course on any Monday if you are not an absolute beginner (these courses start 1st and 3rd Monday only). Our classes are on-going, meaning there is no starting and ending date of class. According to the result of your level placement tests, you are placed in one of the classes which is most adapted to your French level. Our school is open all year round except for bank holidays.
4. How do the “on-going” classes work?
The objective of each class level is defined in terms of grammatical knowledge, as well as comprehension and oral expression abilities. Some students make natural progress staying in the same class for a while, whereas others show a rapid improvement in French and move to a more advanced-level class. Thanks to the small class format, we can pay attention to EACH student and make necessary changes of class level placement so as to encourage his/her progress in French.
5. When do I take placement tests?
At LUTECE LANGUE, you don’t lose your time and money by taking placement tests on the first day of class. When your enrollment is complete, we send you a written test by email. The test needs to be completed without a dictionary and returned 2-3 weeks prior to your starting date. An oral test (2-3 min) is given on the phone. Please call us at +33 1 42 36 31 51 between 12:30 and 1 pm French time once you have completed written test. Both tests are mandatory for all students, including beginners. There is absolutely NO problem even if you can’t answer a single question on the written test, or can’t hold conversation during the oral test. The purpose is just to check your “current” French level. Without tests, we can’t correctly evaluate your level and thus can’t guarantee an appropriate placement.
6. When do I know my class schedule? I am available only in the afternoon.
Due to our on-going class system, as well as continuous new and renewing enrollments, the planning of class schedule is often finalized around Wednesday for the following week. Most of our classes meet in the morning but some classes take place in the afternoon. At the time of enrollment, you are requested to give us your availability for class. From a pedagogic point of view, it is important that we can place you in an appropriate level, whether the class meets in the morning or afternoon. Therefore, it sometimes becomes complicated if you are available for class only in the morning/afternoon. In any case, we always try to find a solution.
7. What shall I do the first day of class? What shall I bring?
You are requested to arrive at school 15 minutes before the class begins so as to check your placement and finalize administration. You just need to bring pens and notebooks to the class. The lesson starts on the first day.
8. Who are the teachers? Which methods do you use?
LUTECE LANGUE employs a professional teaching team. All teachers carefully selected by the school are native French, possessed with both rich teaching experience and university degree in FLE (Français Langue Etrangère).
The school uses a large range of teaching methods; text books, CDs, every day texts (newspapers, advertising), etc. Teachers use methods and materials according to the needs of students. They give you handouts during class and you don’t need to buy the text books you use.
